3 New Year's Resolutions to Keep

Dark Leafy Greens.jpg

We are officially five weeks into the New Year, so how are all those New Year's resolutions coming along?

The statistics on how many people actually follow through and accomplish their New Year’s resolutions are rather grim. Studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days, and only 8% accomplish them. Please don’t be part of that statistic.

So if I can offer you one piece of advice, it would be to accept the fact that you fell off the wagon…but just get right back on it! Rethink the idea that once you cheat, you've blown it, so you might as well binge. Instead, shake off the dirt and jump right back on because falling off the wagon is not fatal!

Here are 3 New Year’s resolutions to keep:

Take your Vitamin D supplement!

In August, the British Medical Journal published a HUGE study that found that Vitamin D supplementation was associated with a 16% lower risk of cancer! Currently, there’s some scientific debate (isn’t there always) about how much vitamin D people need each day, but in my practice, I recommend 2,000 IU/day. Have a fruit or vegetable with every meal and snack!

Ideally, half your plate would be vegetables, but I get how overwhelming that is, so start small with just making sure every meal and snack has at least a fruit or a vegetable! Eat real whole food!

Clear your diet of processed and refined foods, which tend to be high in sugar and fat, and low in fibre. But keep in mind that one meal will not sink your digestive ship; instead, it is chronic consumption of hyper-processed junk and convenience foods that leads to trouble. As a rule, eat plenty of whole plant foods and don’t worry about the occasional margarita and nachos exception.

Happy New Year!
