Happy (belated) Canada Day!

Well it’s official, summer is finally here – the kiddies are out of school, the sun is shining, and as a bonus…it’s actually hot outside! But before you start complaining that it’s too hot and abandon your outdoor adventures, I thought I would break down the nutritional information on your favorite refresher. Lucky for you, there are now three fast food chains that pretty much make the same delicious iced coffee – we have Starbucks’ Frappuccino, Tim Hortons’ Iced Capp and now McDonald’s Frappe. So, if you had to pick one based on nutritional information alone, which one would you choose? Before you check out the table below please note that I tried to make the sizes as equal as possible and used the regular/whole milk option with no whip cream.

  • A Tall (12oz = 350mL) Frappuccino contains 180 kcal, 2.5 g of fat and 36 g of sugar

  • A 10oz Iced Capp has 250 kcal, 11 g of fat and 33 g of sugar

  • A 275mL Frappe contains 210 kcal, 2.5 g of fat and 37g of sugar

For reference 345mL of Coke is 150 calories and 39 grams of sugar, which is a lot of sugar!

Unfortunately, all have a ton of sugar, so that doesn’t narrow it down. But it appears the Frappuccino is the winner based on calories and total fat - plus, it’s the largest size on the table! Also, I love how Starbucks offers a lighter version of their Frappuccino, which brings the calories down to 90 kcal and the sugar down to 19 grams.

Whatever drink you choose – enjoy it because it’s not your everyday refresher, just an amazing treat on a hot beautiful sunny summer day!

Coconut water anyone? Well, that’s a whole other post – stay tuned!
